First, let me say that John McCain is taking the low road in criticizing Barack Obama. His punches are cheap and have little intellectual merit.
Today on Hardball, an entire segment was devoted to whether or not the recent McCain ad comparing Obama to Paris Hilton was racist or not. Apparently it is a stereotype that black men like bimbos. I think it is a vague case at best, and I can’t tell what is worse: grasping at straws to find examples of racism, or even having a debate about such cheap advertising…
In all fairness to McCain though, Newsbusters is reporting that in fact Obama made the Paris Hilton parallel himself…
A February 24, 2005, Washington Post article begins:
There’s nothing exotic or complicated about how phenoms are made in Washington, and, more to the point, how they are broken.
“Andy Warhol said we all get our 15 minutes of fame,” says Barack Obama. “I’ve already had an hour and a half. I mean, I’m so overexposed, I’m making Paris Hilton look like a recluse.”
Now I still can’t tell what’s worse: McCain making cheap comparisons, or Obama vindicating them.
McCain is climbing in the polls. These cheap tactics seem to be working, and Obama is having a hard time coming down from the pedestal to prove McCain wrong.
